Christian Music in the Movies

One movie that has been in the news lately is Soul Surfer, starring AnnaSophia Robb. The movie is based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton, a champion surfer who lost an arm in a shark attack. Hamilton has always said that her faith played a part in her recovery and eventual return on the board, so it's no wonder that the soundtrack is filled with Christian artists. Mat Kearney contributes "Runaway" and recent Dove award winner Francesca Batttistelli adds her hit "It's Your Life." Also, Chris Sligh covers Katy Perry's "Firework" and Britt Nicole contributes "Set the World on Fire."

Of course, Soul Surfer wasn't the first movie to use Christian and Gospel artists on movie soundtracks. One notable example is A Walk to Remember, starring Mandy Moore and Shane West. Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, tells the story of an unconventional couple: a homely girl and a popular boy. Switchfoot was featured prominently on the soundtrack, which lead to their breakthrough album, "The Beautiful Letdown." Two notable tracks: their version of "Only Hope" and "Dare You to Move."

While its rare that Christian and Gospel artists to be included on movie soundtracks, its even rarer that one is called to produce one. That was certainly the case for Kirk Franklin, who produced the soundtrack to Kingdom Come. Franklin's work has already been featured on inspirational soundtracks to Passion of the Christ and Prince of Egypt. According to an article on TodaysChristianMusic.com, movies directors have been asking Franklin to contribute to their movies, but he declined because the plots never matched with his lifestyle and faith. Kingdom Come is the story of a family dealing with a death in the family - along with other issues - through faith, something that Franklin can get behind. Artists on the soundtrack included Mary Mary, Crystal Lewis and Trin-i-tee 5:7.

Christian music is rarely featured in the movies. However, when those movies feature faith-based plots like the ones mentioned  above, they are a good match. Here's hoping that more Christian and Gospel artists are featured in the future.

Passion-Here I Am To Worship

Here is a video of Passion, an indie music artist, singing the popular worship song, "Here I Am to Worship." Although his work is most R&B, he does acknowledge his faith and church upbringing through covers of various Christian songs. Also in the spirit of the Easter season, the line, "I'll never know how much it cost/to see my sin upon that cross" is more relevant than ever. Hope you enjoy the video!

The Newsboys at Spirit West Coast 2010 performing "Jesus Freak"

Here's a special video: a cover of the song "Jesus Freak" by the Newsboys. This cover is very special because their newest lead singer, Micheal Tait, was a member of DC Talk, who originally wrote and sang the song. With its grunge rock sound, this song is credited for exposing DC Talk into a broader audience and establishing them as innovators in the Contemporary Christian genre. If you need any proof of this, consider these facts: CCM Magazine named it as the second greatest song in Christian Music and it's downloadable content for Rock Band. How many Christian bands can say that?

If you want the hear the studio version featuring rapper KJ-52, buy or download Newsboys' newest album Born Again.

News Flash: Grammy Restructuring

Earlier today, the Recording Academy, the group responsible for the Grammy Awards, announced that they are restructuring next year's ceremony by cutting down the number of categories to 78. You can read the announcement here. As expected, the major awards (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist) won't be touched. But, what does it means for the Gospel categories? For one thing, there is a name change; starting next year, the Gospel field is now the Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Field.

Here's how the awards will be broken down:
  • Best Gospel Performance is now Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Performance.
  • Best Gospel Song is the same. However, based on the song, it could also be nominated for Best Contemporary Christian Song.
  • Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album, Best Rock Or Rap Gospel Album, and Best Southern, Country Or Bluegrass Gospel Album will be considered for next year's Best Contemporary Christian Music Album category.
  • Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album, Best Rock Or Rap Gospel Album, Best Traditional Gospel Album will be considered in next year's Best Gospel Album.
Long story short: the Gospel/Contemporary Christian category will have 5 awards instead of 7.

So, what do you think of the restructuring?

Mary Mary on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno"

I've scoured the net to find a video with just Mary Mary's performance of "Never Wave My Flag" on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. However, the clips I found weren't clear enough. So, here is the link to the complete March 31st episode (the performance begins at the 37:55 mark). In the meantime, check out their newest album, Something Big or catch them on tour with BeBe & CeCe Winans and VaShawn Mitchell.
