News Flash: Grammy Restructuring

Earlier today, the Recording Academy, the group responsible for the Grammy Awards, announced that they are restructuring next year's ceremony by cutting down the number of categories to 78. You can read the announcement here. As expected, the major awards (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist) won't be touched. But, what does it means for the Gospel categories? For one thing, there is a name change; starting next year, the Gospel field is now the Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Field.

Here's how the awards will be broken down:
  • Best Gospel Performance is now Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Performance.
  • Best Gospel Song is the same. However, based on the song, it could also be nominated for Best Contemporary Christian Song.
  • Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album, Best Rock Or Rap Gospel Album, and Best Southern, Country Or Bluegrass Gospel Album will be considered for next year's Best Contemporary Christian Music Album category.
  • Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album, Best Rock Or Rap Gospel Album, Best Traditional Gospel Album will be considered in next year's Best Gospel Album.
Long story short: the Gospel/Contemporary Christian category will have 5 awards instead of 7.

So, what do you think of the restructuring?
